The “Belarusian Smolensk Region” project and the Institute of Belarusian History and Culture invite you to participate in the publication of a collection of articles dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the first mention of the city of Smolensk.
Smolensk is a city that is an inseparable part of Belarusian history and culture. It was the Smolensk land that gave our country its first Belarusian science fiction writer Zmitrok Astapenko, Prime Minister of the BNR Kuzma Tereshchenko, lyric poet Siarhei Fomin, and military figure and encyclopedist Alexander Ruzhantsev.
In 1917, representatives of the Smolensk region voted at the First All-Belarusian Congress for the full independence of the republic and its sovereignty. Soon Smolensk became the first capital of the Belarusian republic, and active national development began in the city and province. Even on the eve of World War II, Belarusian schools operated on the territory of the Smolensk region, and a significant number of people declared their Belarusian nationality.
This year, the entire Smolensk Region celebrates a glorious date and the jubilee of its beloved city. Belarusians, for whom this land is not foreign, join the celebrations.
In connection with this anniversary, we are pleased to announce the planned publication of materials dedicated to the role of Belarusians in the history and culture of the Smolensk region, as well as the Bryansk region, Tver region, and Pskov region — Belarusian borderlands that are part of Russia.
